The themes that were presented throughout Martin Fierro-The Gaucho were love for nature and passion. As he is expressing his overall feelings towards Martin he shows the passion he had for being a Gaucho. "how the gauchos went around, always cheerful and well mounted and willing for work." The quote shows the passion towards Martin Fierro for being a Gaucho. And throughout the poetic story, the metaphors about nature go on. Clearly showing the love for nature Fierro had. Making Fierro an iconic figure in Argentina. John F Kennedy, could be an example of and iconic figure from America. He is frequently the topic of many inspirational, information books, and short stories. All authors that discuss or inform others about Kennedy, usually explain his passion and dedication for his work- similar to Martin Fierro. They are both inspirational icons in their areas.
ReplyDeleteI agree that JFK was a pretty cool guy, but do you have any ideas of American figures from literature/stories?
DeleteMr G made it a little too broad because he said american literature. Not world.
Delete(Sarcasm)
DeleteMartin fierro is fictional. Think more on the lines of captain America!
Deletei was thinking like superman in comics . he is more famous than captain america and he can fly. Just wasnt sure what you meant by american figure. so thanks for clearing that out.( by the way you should of put a time on this)
DeleteSome themes I saw within the poem of Martin Fierro were passion and confidence. I saw his passion to be something great and to always put his best foot forward. Now that I think about it, another theme that is prevalent in the poem was also perseverance. With this great passion that Martin has, also comes his unstoppable perseverance that may come across as a bit cocky, but it's definitely not. This misconception of cockiness is misinterpreted with the admirable confidence Martin possesses keeping his spirit alive and keeping him going through life. He believes in his talents and gifts and is determined to stay true to those and he's not going to allow himself to be told otherwise. Hmm I suppose some iconic figures in American lit. would be possibly Shakespeare? I'm uncertain of that because I know he wasn't completely original, but he did however, set a foundation for many aspiring playwrights and writers.
ReplyDeleteInteresting themes I picked similar ones. However, Shakespeare was a real person Martin Fierro was fictional.
DeleteShakespeare is British not American
ReplyDeleteConfidence to do what?
DeletePassion and tenacity are two themes i came across in Martin Fierro. Martin Fierro had great passion in being a gaucho and he represented gauchos in good way. In a way that he showed confidence without it being too cocky and arrogant and he showed that gauchos are well-rounded people. Martin Fierro was tenacious. He didn't give up no matter and did what he thought needed to be done without letting the negative circumstances get the best of him. One American iconic figure would be Martin Luther King Junior? He used literature (wrote "I Have A Dream) to get his message out in hopes of stopping racial discrimination. MLK, also, had passion and tenacity and used it to go forth what he believed needed to be stopped.
ReplyDeleteWait, if we were to choose a fictional person, would Winnie The Pooh count as an iconic american figure that came from Literature? Buzz Light Year? Hmmm, James Bond??
Deletei think james bond is British
DeleteYeah, never mind, he's British secret service agent. Right?
DeleteIn Martin Fierros poem "The Gaucho" showed many interesting things about Martin as a person. The theme of his poem is sorrow. Through the poem he feels that as if he's imperfect to himself and to society. When he writes he expresses some emotions from within that he had experience all throughout his life. He tampers with his emotions being shown in his writings instead of expressing his true emotions. An American iconic figure in my perspective is Charles Dickens because he is called the "International Literary Celebrity." He tries to show the characters problems in the story and adds humor with his writing. Despite his writing abilities of humor he was also known as an influential writer during the 1800s because of his free writing/creativity.
ReplyDeleteInteresting! Sorrow is a great choice of theme. Do you have another theme in mind? In iconic figures, what about an iconic figure thinking along the lines of "Captain America" as Mr. G says?
DeleteWhy would he feel imperfect? Wasn't a gaucho like an iconic figure?
DeleteJose Hernandez wrote the poem Martin Fierro. Get your facts straight!
DeleteTwo themes that were presented in Martin Fierro-Gaucho were freedom and wisdom. Hernandez expresses the freedom that Martin Fierro had as a gaucho by saying “It is my glory to live as free, as a bird in the sky...” Gauchos weren't tied down to a certain place. They roamed the Pampas freely. Martin Fierro did whatever he wanted, no one told him what he should or shouldn't do. He had freedom and it's what everyone wants. To be able to control your own life and live it how you want to. Throughout the poem you start to realize that Martin Fierro is growing wiser as the years go by. He goes through life experiencing more things and learning a lot as well. I guess Robin Hood would be considered an iconic American figure. He had freedom. He always did whatever he wanted and didn't let anyone tell him what to do.
ReplyDeleteWas Robin Hood American?? I thought he was British
DeleteTwo of the themes present in “Martin Fierro” are corruption and suffering. He is always mentioning how unjust the authorities are to the gauchos. They unjustly arrest the gauchos even though they are not hurting anyone or causing problems. They also don’t pay him for the work he performs during his stay at the army fort. Also, he always talks about the many hardships he has faced during his life and how much he has suffered. I think that an iconic American figure has to be Indiana Jones. He represents the adventurous and risk- taking person.
ReplyDeleteThanks for bringing that up, i didn't even think about corruption. Nice choice in iconic American figure.
DeleteDid you get a chance to read it in Spanish (Castellano)? I like that...Indiana Jones. The only problem is that we don't really read about him in literature.
DeletePassion/pride, freedom and independence were some themes that i felt Martin Fierro played through out his poem. He describes his pride and passion for baing a gaucho and also shows that he is independent because he is a gaucho and doesn't really need anyone else. Someone that Martin Fierro reminds me of is Superman because he is an iconic figure to the united states as much as Martin Fierro is to Argentina. Superman is one of a kind and he is independent and shows his passion for being a kryptonian (i guess) and shows pride by using his powers for good.
ReplyDeleteNice themes, I also thought Superman is an iconic figure. How does Martin Fierro demonstrate freedom?

DeleteThe themes I found in "Martin Fierro The Gaucho" were perseverance and self confidence. In the poem Martin Fierro was always confident about what he did. He was not afraid of anything. He would not limit what he could do just because others of his kind did not do that. Some iconic figures in America are Nancy Drew, Sherlock Holmes, or super heroes such as Superman. I used to read a lot of Nancy Drew books and I read shorter versions of Sherlock Holmes. Those books made me want to be a spy all of the time. I always tried to find clues, even when there was nothing to find clues for. I also was influenced by Superwoman a lot. When people would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would say that I wanted to be Superwoman. I would carry a jump rope everywhere I went, and I would pretend it was like Superwoman's rope she carries.
ReplyDeleteRmember...Fierro did not have any superhuman powers!
DeleteHaha that's pretty funny..
DeleteThemes in Martin Fierro are pride and rebellion. Jose Hernandez's iconic character Fierro is described as a rebellious but prideful guancho. Some iconic figures from literature are Sherlock Holmes, The Cat in the Hat, and Harry Potter.
ReplyDeleteGive examples from American literature...not British!
DeleteBut I like British ones too!...but okay..
DeleteI meant to say Hester Prynne.
DeleteThemes I found in the poem "Martin Fierro" is passion and courage. He describes passion towards the life of a gaucho. Nature always plays a role on what they become of their life. Courage was shown on the way difficult moments came to his life but still kept moving on. His family being his main priority on keeping him standing. I think Ernest Hemingway would be an iconic American figure? Not quit sure because I'm confused about what's an iconic American figure.
ReplyDeleteSelf-pity and identity are major themes in the poem. Self-pity is described in the beginning, having a sorrowful and sad tone. He reflects his feelings through his guitar, making "the top string moan and the low string cry." Although he describes himself as lonely, he also describes himself as belonging with other "criollos" and those with a similar identity to him. He gives the feeling of loneliness in belonging to some sort of exclusive club: the Gauchos. An iconic figure in American Literature is Lennie Smalls from Of Mice and Men because he captured the essence of the American Dream. He might not exactly be a role model, but he was a gentle giant with a big dream.
