  1. The main theme of "Psycho" is love and the things that it can drive people to do. Norman's obsession with his mother and fight to win her love is what causes him to kill her and the stepfather in the first place. When she is dead and her love is gone, he develops the multi-personality insanity so that he could still "be" with her. In Marion's case, her love for Sam causes her to have an affair with him, losing her social morality and developing an alternate ego. Her love for Sam also drives her to steal the money, so that they could meet up and get married to start a new, respectable life. Although the psychological themes of the movie are very important, LOVE is the driving force of the conflicts, and hence the theme in "Psycho."

    1. I agree love was a big factor in the film. It was responsible for the character's actions.

  2. The duality of human nature is the main theme in the film “Psycho”. Clearly seen in the movie, Marion and Norman have a positive and a negative side. We can see Marion changes to her negative self while she has an affair with Sam, dresses in dark garments, and steals the money. Marion also demonstrated her positive self while talking to Sam. She told him about her wish to get married, like all the women in the 1950s did. Norman’s dark side is visible when he turns into the mother and murders Marion and the other young women. His good side is seen when he brings Marion something to eat, acts friendly, and can’t consider the idea if placing her mother in a madhouse. When both characters become their negative self it leads them to do things that cause their destruction.

  3. The main theme of "Psycho" in my opinion would be the duality of human nature. Marion and Norman are two examples that show that in the movie. They show their "good" and "bad" side and they let their "bad" side take over causing consequences. The masculine/feminine side of a boy/girl can be good for them to understand one another. It also depends on the person to be able to know how to control their masculine/feminine side and not end up like Marion or Norman.

  4. In the film "Psycho" the main theme is morality in the 1950's. Both Marion and Norman broke the social codes of their time in their own way and were punished. Marion wanted to be married like the rest of the woman of her time, so she committed adultery & stole money which led to her death. Even though she was going to return the money and shower away her sins, it was too late. Norman's mother didn't do her social rule of being the ideal house wife, and paid more attention to her new husband than Norman, which caused Norman to be who he became. He was then punished by being imprisoned for his multiple murders. Both characters broke unwritten codes and were punished in the end.

  5. The theme of Psycho is desire. Both Marion and Norman have strong desires which they supress until an opportunity presents itself that enables them to take action and react to it. In Marion's case, her desire to be married to the one she has an affair with causes her to formulate a plan to steal money and use it to pay for her marriage. Norman's repressed desire was to be the only one in his mother's life, that is until another man came along to distract her from him. Being left mentally unstable from the trauma of losing his father, he succeeded in murdering his own mother and her lover. His desire could not be satisfied with her gone, so his inner psyche produced an exact mental replica of her in Norman's mind, which often took over completely. His desire for his mother was so great it caused major events to occur when the mother part of his psyche conflicted with Marion. She ended up there in the first place because of her desire to be married to Sam.

  6. I would say the major theme of the story is the duality of nature. The main charcaters of the story have a continuos conflict with their positive and negative sides. Marion begins to lean more towards her "dark side" if you will, when she decides to steal the money. Norman as well deals with his motherly side and his "Norman" side. This battle of positive vs negative plays a huge role in the fate of each character and how the story at the end unfolds.

  7. I believe that the film "Psycho" has many themes, but the greatest one is the desire to be loved. Each character's flaws and actions can be traced back to their desire to be loved. Marion wanted to be married and loved by Sam. In order to get that she needed money, so she stole it. Norman wanted to be loved by his mother. His mother's boyfriend got in the way of that, so he killed them both. In order to be loved by his mother Norman created a double personality so that she could be there loving him. Their desire to be loved drived them to do immoral crimes that led to their deaths.

  9. The theme of Psycho is welfare. When I talk about welfare I mean "the good fortune, health, happiness, prosperity, and etc. of a person, group,or organization; well-being." I use this contradiction since the main character believes in good fortune/happiness when she obtains the money. Her feelings aggravate her when Sam leaves her and goes off to work to pay off a debt that would take awhile. This can also tie in with other themes, but this one in MY VIEW would be possible as a suggestion for a theme.

  10. The main theme of psycho was the duality of human nature. Both Marion and Norman show there "shadow" side throughout the film. Another concept that goes along with the duality of human nature in psycho is that every person has at least some masculine side even though there a female and it goes the same for males. If your a male you have a least some feminism side.  Also both Marion and Norman show this throughout the film.

  11. The main theme of "Psycho" is the duality of human nature. The idea that every human being has a "bad" side and a "good" side. This is shown throughout the movie. Marion shows her "good" side when she's with Sam and at work she seems nice. However, she also shows her "bad" side when she's having an affair with a married man, breaking the social morals of the 1950s, didn't want to be told what to do, and she lied several times. Norman's "good" side was that he was friendly, motherly, and he loved his mother. Norman's "bad" side is what made him do horrible things. His mother controlled him and was a big part of his "bad" side.
