Inferno!

Dante believed that faith was the most important value in life. Next to faith, however, he saw reason as the highest human value. How do you define faith and reason? Which is more valued in today's world? Which do you think SHOULD be more highly valued? Explain your response.

  1. I define faith as not something you hope for , but another word for destiny. I think reason is way more vauled in this world due to everything must have a reason. What happens to you now a days is not just because of faith but a reason why something trajic or good might happen to you. I think faith should be more high valued since if you know what your faith is then you know how you would live life and what you expect to happen in your life and so on.

    1. I kind of understand where you're coming from but what exactly do you see reason as? Are you saying that with faith your life is more directed and that you can lead a better life with your faith?

  2. Obviously faith and reason are extremely different and the way they are viewed is also very different. Reason is best defined as something that's logical and faith being what you truly believe in and what you have been told is the way things should be. I think in some ways reason and faith are both valued equally in the sense that you have people who believe that living by your faith is the only way and the right way, while you have those who think that reason outweighs faith and religion. I think reason should be valued more because not everyone comes from the same belief system that you may have come from and so therefore conflicts begin. If everyone valued reason, then everyone would tend to agree more because there wouldn't that religious issue and/or conflict of beliefs.

    1. I agree with you on how faith is dependent on your belief system and that counter acts and causes conflicts because not everybody has the same belief system.

    2. I agree that if everyone valued reason, then people would agree with eachother. This way people would have to rely on facts proven and accepted, instead of something they assumed.

    3. I completely agree with you. I read this after I published mine, and I noticed that they were strikingly similar. But my question to you is, what is your definition of logical?

  4. I define faith as a confidence for what will happen in the near future either dependent on someone else or your belief in a unnatural being(GOD). Reasoning is the ability to decide from right from wrong, true from false , or fake from real eventhough not all times you reason the right way or just to your convinience. Reasoning is more highly valued in this world because not everybody shares the same faith or belief system. I think that reasoning should be more highly valued because reasoning is your choice while faith is dependent on someone else or something else.

  5. I define reason as having proof or an explanation for why or how things happen. Unlike reason, faith is more like trusting or believing in something without having a logical explanation to why you believe it. Reason is more valued in today's world because many people always try to find a reason or explanation to many things. I think reason should be more valued because everyone would see things from different aspects instead of just believing only what you think. With reason there would be less conflict between what others believe is right.

    1. I agree with you Dave and see your point of view but in my point of view I think faith has to be valued more because it plays a big role in your life. It shows the person you are and leads to the person you become.

    2. Yes, I agree with you Dave. Reason allows one to be more open-minded, as opposed to being close-minded and arrogant.

    3. I agree with your definition of faith. That's how I think of faith too.

    4. I agree that faith doesn't necessarily have proof, but you should have a logical explanation as to why you have faith in something.

  6. I define faith as what you believe which contributes to who you are/become. A reason to me is a fact because it's what proves what is to be true.In today's world reason is more valued because in any case of wanting to prove something you got to have reasons which are facts. Also because most of the time reasons help you win what your trying to prove or explain. A reason does have its strong figures in life but I think faith should be more highly valued. Faith be what leads to what kind of person you become in life. Your believes can lead to achieving your goals and help you make a better life than others. My point is faith has a big meaning in your life therefore it should be most valued.

  7. Faith, Faith can be described as complete trust and confidence in someone or something. In Dantes perspective he believes that faith is the highest human value,he shows absolute belief in God and he teaches Virgil the belief of god. Present day we hardly see people believe in their "beliefs" and as of today they truly believe in reasoning than beliefs because reasoning can be justified in more aspects as of "religion/beliefs", but in perspective I would really rely in faith because I always think of this phrase, "WHAT WOULD JESUS DO" this phrase always works.

  8. I define faith as a belief or a sense of hope that a person feels toward something and/or someone. I define reason as a belief that has been proven with facts and evidence, and it is accepted by others. In todays world reason is valued more because whenever someone states something, someone else says, "Why?" If that person does not provide an acceptable answer, then it is discarded. I believe that reason should be valued more because if everyone valued their own faith, then people would be arguing about who is right all of the time.

    1. I agree with you Amairani. Reason should be valued more because no one wants to be wrong with what they have faith in, so reason settles it.

    2. I agree with you in what you said that reason has to be approved by others, like you have to evidence that supports your statement or else they won't belive what you are stating.

  9. I define faith and reason as being polar opposites. Faith to me is the trust in one's predictions, and reason is the testing of conjectures that comply with nature's laws by observation. Faith created ancient religious divisions that persist today, and reason created the concept of science that has the potential to improve human life, as well as to degrade it. Despite being opposite, they both play an important role to our world; none valued over the other. For example, reason was used in creating this country to distinguish it from monarchy, but faith in it allowed it to succeed. Without reason, faith is blind, but without faith the reason becomes lost. I don't believe that one should be valued over the other, but I personally prefer reason. I'm a man of nature and science, so naturally I'd value reason more. Both are gifts nature granted us that makes us different from other animals species, so we should acknowledge and learn to make the two coexist.

    1. I like how you mentioned that they are opposites, but they need each other to make sense.

    3. You're right faith and reason should coexist.

    4. Honestly the way i see it, people have faith in scientific theories, because they know scientists use logic and reason to draw conclusions. For example, the average person doesn't conduct experiments solving the mysteries of the magnet because they trust in what science has taught them. It's faith in reason. huh.

    5. Reason lies in the result, faith lies in the cause.

  10. Faith is believing in some unnatural force or being that will help make things better. You don't really have a reason for having faith, you just do. Sometimes when things are really bad you just remember to have faith ,because it seems like it's your last desperate attempt for things to hopefully get better. Reason is logic thinking, cause, and explanation for something. In today's world reason is valued more than faith, because people tend to think more logically than just believing in something that there really is no logic behind it. I believe that reason should be more highly valued because there is logic and thinking rather than just having faith, not that there's anything wrong with it. Reason is thought more carefully and there usually is proof.

  11. Faith is the inner belief in something on the emotional and even spiritual level. Reason is the use of logic and common sense to come to a conclusion. Faith is very important in human life because it is basically hope, but we also need reason to at least have sensible faith in something. If you have faith in your beliefs, that's great, but you should know why you believe it, and have a reason why you believe in it, otherwise, it is blind faith. You are an arrogant blind man crossing the street without checking for cars. Faith is the very foundation of religion, so it is very common in modern society. Faith in a common deity brings people of common worship together, but it often creates enemies towards believers of a different god. If faith secures the belief in an absolute existence of a god, then doesn't it take faith to secure a belief in the absolute non-existence of a god? This is why I find that Atheism also takes a lot of faith. While I believe reason should be more highly valued, reason does not always lead to the right conclusions because we are all open to different interpretations.

  12. The way i define reason is as an explanation for a belief. The explanation would be based on facts and logic. Faith to me would be define as a belief of something that has no explanation based on facts to be true. In today's world i think reason is more valued than faith because it has proof and faith cannot make reason change. Personally i think reason should be more highly valued because no matter how much faith you have in something once reason is discovered, than faith is not needed and it doesn't work the other way around.

  13. I think an analogy would fit the discussion. 3 men lived their whole life confined to one room. Man 1 is absolutely positive that there IS another room outside of the one they live in. Man 2 is absolutely sure that there is NOT another room outside. Both Man 1 and Man 2 must have a strong sense of faith to have these beliefs, without truly knowing. Man 3, based on logic and reason, knows that they cannot be sure about whether there is another room or not, because they have never stepped out, and there is no way to truly know.

  14. Faith is defined as something you believe about without needing any evidence or explanations to prove your ideas. While reason is the explanation of any beliefs, being about nature, health, etc. In today's world I think reason is more valued than faith because it has proof and answers the question that we all ask ourselves at one point or another. "Why?" is the magical question we all have come to enjoy asking, because we want questions of life, like why we're here and where we'll go. Reason and faith have their pro's and con's such as with faith when you have nothing left then all you have is the hope for a brighter tomorrow. I personally believe that reason should be more highly valued because I don't want my life to be a mystery. But nonetheless they both need to coexist, because one can't go on without the other pushing it.

  15. Faith is to believe in something or someone that is not based on truth, but has a logical explanation as to why you believe it. While reason gives you a sense of things. Reason is pretty important because, just like i defined it, it gives you a sense of things for better understanding. In today's world, faith seems to be more valued. Most, have faith towards a person but don't have a logical explanation. They , maybe, use their gut feelings? This tends to cause some kind of negative emotion which may lead to violence. I would, personally, like reason to be the highly valued one because that way , it would be easier to make sense of everyone and why they do some things. I think it would be interesting to hear everyone give reason for their doings, specially the wrong doings. . . BUT, i wouldn't want to hear all the reasons if it's pretty obvious. That way, people can learn and and have an understanfing on why people do certain things, and that will, maybe, get people to be more cautious.

    1. I define faith as loyalty to a person or a thing. I would define reason as a cause to an action.  In this life I would say reason is valued more then faith for many reasons. For example, everything happens for a reason not because of faith. Another reason I think reason is valued more in life is because like Uriel said not everyone in life has the same faith or believe system.  In life reason  should be more highly valued because reason is based on logic. Therefore logic usually tells you to do the right thing. When people use there logic they all mostly think similar. If we would all think similar than we would not have a lot of disputes.

  17. To me faith is to have complete trust in something/someone, like you don't have something but you have faith that you soon will get what you want even if it seems like you won't. Reason is logic and evidence to go along with what your stating. In today's world reason is more valued because when you state something you have to have evidence to support because they will always question your statements. I think faith should be highly value and maybe because I have it but also because anyone can have reason if they study for it but not everyone can put their complete trust in something/someone(God).

  18. Faith is to have belief in yourself or in another person's ability to do well in my opinion. However, it is not based on proof. Everyone in this world has faith and without faith, where would our belief come from. We have faith in all sorts of different things, for example, god. People have faith in different religions. Reason is to give a person better understanding of why. Everyone gives reason to what they state or how they want to explain what they want to explain by giving reason. I think that reason should be more valued because it can give me a better trust if I can be given reason.
