Short Story

Soon we will be writing our own short stories. My question to you is-what makes a great story? Is it the suspense? Mystery? Romance? Check out this link to see what Steven Spielberg has to say about making a great story.

This post is worth 5points. Remember to respond to other post as well.

  1. In my opinion, what makes a great story is the suspense because it captures the readers to keep reading. Not only that, but the way suspense is set up and how it is worded. It should be described thoroughly in a way that makes sense, so readers can picture or imagine the happenings.

    1. I agree with you. personaly I think that if the story holds no interest, it is not worth my time to read it.

    2. I agree with you on how the suspense is set up and how it is worded. Sometimes it doesn't make sense how the author writes it and I get really confused.

    3. Yeah a story with suspense is like a shy, intriguing person. You want to find out more.

    4. Suspense in my opinion is one of the greatest things in stories which really attracts the readers. Picturing a moment in a story really makes you feel like your in it.

    5. I agree that a good story needs suspense. Also if the story gives the reader the opportunity to picture the events, then the reader feels a part of the story and makes the story much more appealing.

  2. To have a great story it has to have suspense, because then you want to keep reading to find out what's going to happen next. Some mystery in the stroy would be good too because it makes the reader think about what they just read to try and figure out the myserty. A great story also needs to have good details and descriptions. You need to be able to visualize the story in your mind. When a book has all these things in it, to me it's a great stroy.

    1. Well romance would make it nice. Most stories I have read did include romance, which did make the story better, because then I would wonder what happened to those people.

  3. In order for the story to be good it must be suspenseful as well as contain a drop of mystery to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. If the story doesnt hold excitement, it is not going to keep the reader wanting to read more and more and make the reader think they cant get enough. It should also make the reader picture every detail in the story as if watching a film, if a story is able to do that, then the story is worth reading.

  4. I kind of like how you said that if a story is able to make a reader picture every detail in the story as if watching a film, then the story is worth reading. But, i don't think it's necessarily worth reading just because it's able to be pictured, because what if you personally don't like the story, and the writer was good at doing the descriptive parts.

    2. True, but sometimes the story can be too wordy if all it does is be "good at doing the descriptive parts"

  5. Creating a story that will attract the reader will be quite difficult. It's difficult since stories can be created in any way which may or may not be liked by the reader, stories may be boring, romantic, or even dramatic. In perspective I would go for mystery since everyone will put suspense so I thought another type of story would work as well. Mystery is based on finding clues in order to decipher the conflict throughout the story. The big idea in perspective of mystery is to solve the problem during the story before you finish the story which gives out the solution of the story. In mystery you have to reread the passage over and over again to really understand the truth of the mystery in the book.

  6. In order to have a great story, it is the suspense that is key. Suspense is what toys with one's wonder, and that wonder drives us to be interested and gives us the want to know. Without it, the story is predictable and not very intriguing. For example, the overuse of cliches such as boy meets girl, fall in love, something happens, they overcome it, they live happily ever after is boring without "the flavor" to make the "story sandwich" really impressive.

    1. I agree predictable stories aren't intriguing. Also cliches can get boring.

    2. Are you saying that if you add suspense to a cliche story, it suddenly becomes interesting?

  7. A great story should include suspense, and foreshadowing details to make it seem mysterious & to keep the reader interested. A great story should also be detailed but gets to the point. The details should either make you visualize something or feel something. Lastly, the beginning should be just as good as the ending.

    1. I strongly agree with your opinion about the beginning being as good as the ending because I usually first read the first paragraphs and if it doesn't catch my attention I won't get that book.

    2. Yup, I also agree that the beginning should be just as good as the end. If a story's beginning grabbed my attention and it had a terrible ending I'd be disappointed of the story.

  8. I noticed that most people stated that suspense is what makes a good story. I agree that suspense can make a story interesting, but you don't necessarily need suspense to create a good story. Different literary elements form the theme of the story and not all themes appeal to all readers. I think what makes a good story is how well it flows. Regardless of what themes you use-suspense, mystery, romance-if it flows well then the reader can really see what the author wants to be seen. The story should not jump around the way a second-grader does tells a story. It should be descriptive, yet it shouldn't linger on a point for too long that the reader loses interest. People have their own interests in what they would enjoy reading, but if it is written in a way that it flows well, then it should be interesting to read.

    1. The mere interest of the story can keep a person reading, without necessarily using suspense. Just sayin'

  9. Personally I would read any type of story, but what I think is more important is the storytelling. Their are a lot of stories which you would think have a great idea, but the way the author narrates or has his series of events at times don't make sense or leave his readers confused. I want to read a book that can create a visual image of the story as I go along. I want a book that makes me think on what can happen, because usually those are the ones that drive the reader to continue reading. Of the few books that I've read have done they were a suspenseful or mystery story.

    1. I agree with you Mark, that a good story sometimes depends on how the author narrates and organizes the events even though the story is full of suspense and mystery.

  10. In my personal opinion mystery story's make a good story for many reasons. For example, it makes you think deaply into the clues in the story to try and solve the puzzle in the story. Solving puzzles for me is fun and that's why I love mystery story's. Another reason I love to read mystery story's is because mystery story's also have a lot of suspense. For example, when you are about to solve the puzzle in the story. Those are a few reasons why I love mystery story's

    1. I agree with you Armando about how mystery stories gets the reader thinking deeply into the clues given but for some people it's just frustrating.

    2. Would you say then, that mystery and suspense are the only things that matter in a good story?

  11. In my opinion I think suspense makes a great story because it leaves the reader thinking and wanting to continue reading to know what's going to happen next. Also because it can grab any readers attention unlike in a mystery or romance.Everyone has different opinions and likes so a mystery or romance book won't interest all readers and a book with suspense makes it more interesting and grabs attention.

  12. To make a good story I think you have to have a little bit of everything in it but I think that it must have some type of suspense to keep the reader's attention and to motivate them to keep on reading. All the books I have read have had some suspense maybe little or a lot, I think this is the most important necessity a good story needs. Also, I think that all stories have suspense because it is what leads to the climax also known as the rising action.

  13. I agree with my classmates that a good thrill story needs suspense and I also think that it needs to make you interested in reading it from the beginning. I believe that when too much mystery is included readers can easily be lost and not have a clue about what is going on. I don’t tend to read many mystery stories because I am not good at putting clues together, but I do enjoy a little bit of mystery when I don’t get confused. I think that romance can sometimes kill the suspenseful scenes because usually the girls are always yelling and sometimes the authors make it way too dramatic, especially in movies.

    1. Yes Diana I'd say a mild amount of suspense in a story makes it all the more enjoyable.

  14. I'd say that a good book comes from the way a story is carried and narrated. If an author can make you feel a part of the story, then you automatically want more and more because you are no longer just a reader, but a character of the story. Also being able to create an image in your head of what is going on in the story you are reading is very important because you understand the full context of the story. Without a visual you simply have words typed on pages and the story then becomes pointless. -Selena S.

  15. I agree that a good story requires suspense and somewhat mystery . A story with suspense and mystery keeps you asking for more, it keeps you wondering what will happen next. For a story to catch my attention i should be able to visualize the scenes and understand whats going on. In my opinion not all stories require romance because sometimes its to predictable. Overall any story is good with or without mystery, romance,or suspense it just makes it that much entertaining.

  17. A great story needs suspense. Suspense makes the reader want to read more and keeps the reader thinking what will happen next. Good description is also required to make a good story. It makes the story much more interesting and makes the readers visualize and understand the story. A story doesn't necessarily need romance or mystery to be great. Each type of story has their own qualities that makes them interesting.

  18. What makes a great story is its creativity. No one wants to read the same story over and over again, or read a story that is totally predictable. A creative story includes suspense of course. However, it is not the only thing. It makes you feel what the characters are feeling, and it catches you off gaurd. For example, in good mystery stories the reader never expects the ending. The story has the reader on their toes the whole time. A great story also needs a good beginning and a great ending because if the ending is terrible then the reader feels like they just waisted their time.

  20. I know I'm late.. BUT I think suspense is what makes a really great story. The thrilling of wanting to know what's next after reading something that makes you go "OMG NOOOO don't do that!". The foreshadowing of making a reader think and predict what will happen next based on the actions and description of a scary event.
